5 Excellent Infographics (and Why They’re Excellent)

It seems no matter where you go, everyone is talking about infographics. Some experts are asking if they are played out/dead/jumped the shark. Some say they’re ubiquitous, but still worth doing if you can truly invest in executing them well.

Now, we can all probably agree that infographics are just a fancy term for visual aid – and that visual aids are nothing new. That said, I have thoroughly enjoyed this emphasis on laying out information visually (it sure beats trying to tell a story with information and Excel 2000). Here are five of my favorite infographics for a little inspiration.

Graphic Design B.C. (before computers)

It’s hard to imagine a time without computers these days. We live in the era of iPhone’s, GPS’s and unlimited Wi-Fi everywhere. But, surely there was graphic design before computers, software and all these gadgets? Wikipedia says that graphic design is a collaborative process between a client and a designer – in conjunction with producers of form (i.e., printers, programmers, sign makers, etc.) — to convey a specific message to a targeted audience. That doesn’t say a thing about Adobe, dual wide-screen monitors or fancy mouses!

Conduct a Creative Brainstorm

Ever wonder how great marketing ideas like the E*TRADE® talking babies, the “man-your-man-could-smell-like-man” from Old Spice® or my all time favorite, the talking stain from Tide® come to be? On the other hand, ever wonder how a group of people could leave a room thinking creepy, talking rodents could stimulate hunger for Quizno’s® or repeatedly saying a brand name in a headache provoking manner could ironically make people want to use HeadOn® to relieve their headache? Good or bad marketing ideas can come from some unlikable places but most stem from a creative brainstorm.

Music is My Muse

There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t feel thankful that my office doesn’t have a soft rock station playing over the intercom. It’s not that I have a problem with Fleetwood Mac or Toni Braxton. I’ve actually found that listening to Genesis is a more effective method of curing hiccups than eating gobs of peanut butter.
