Getting Down with E-Lingo
The first time I heard someone say he was going to skin a Web page, I shuddered. But “skinning” in Web parlance means applying a design to a page or site. Turns out it has nothing to do with taxidermy.
If your organization is moving into integrated marketing, you need to learn e-lingo. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself in meetings asking embarrassing questions of your age-30-and-under coworkers. (I know from whence I speak, having once asked in front of 10 people what “deblink” means after someone said we could “deep link.”)
Here’s a handy multiple-choice quiz. See how many of these terms you can identify correctly.
Hash tags
a) Labels on canned meat products
b) Illegal drug paraphernalia
c) A device for adding metadata to tweets
Bitly
a) A short period of time
b) An under- or overbite, often corrected with orthodontia
c) A service to shorten URLs
SEO
a) Most important person in the company, after the CEO
b) The airport code for Seoul, South Korea
c) Search engine optimization, or a method of helping search engines find your information and move it to the top of their lists
Metadata
a) A new online dating service
b) Short for metabolism-data, used by bariatric surgeons to measure weight loss
c) Bits of information that describe other data
The answers? Always pick “c.” To learn more, visit NetLingo. And do it quickly. Your next integrated marketing meeting will be in deblink of the eye.
