Facebook at Work and Texts in Church?

I was at my daughter’s athletic banquet last night and noticed a father checking email from his phone. Instinctively, I reached for my own phone, wondering how many emails and texts I had missed since I left work only an hour ago.  Then that little voice in my head (and my wife’s “don’t even think about it” stare) reminded me, work can wait. The convenience of working offsite has its freedoms, but by now most of us are realizing the smart phone is a digital leash keeping us tethered to the office. When you’re at work, you’re wondering what your family is doing. When you’re with your family, you’re wondering what’s going on back at the office.

The Internet has made entire portions of our lives a virtual reality. I know people who facebook (can we use this as a verb, like ‘to google’?)  throughout the day at work and I’ve noticed people reading at texts while in church. If we don’t keep up with all these media channels, how will we ever keep up? I’ve thought about joining Workaholics Anonymous, but who really has time?

I have an idea: How about waking up early one morning each week to jump ahead? That’s what I did to write this blog post. I woke up and started typing at 6:30 AM.

Then I noticed the orange glow of sun rising on the horizon and I realized I was missing out again on reality. I’m blogging about work-life balance but not really practicing it. And my wife is still in bed, so there’s nobody to give me that stare, nobody to tell me to put the technology down and just be present in the moment, and so I’m going to end this post abruptly…
